Architecture colors our experience of life just as a stage set or a soundtrack paints our experience of a theater performance. The Azul Rey conference is a organised by REVEN in order to provide an opportunity for the new generation of starchitects to discuss, listen and learn from one another, and to spark a discourse around architecture and its new expressive powers. The conference focuses on exporing the architectural techniques for the production of sensation - paying particular emphasis on the use of color and topological form.

The location of the conference is Mexico city, home of Luis Barragan - a surrealist master of color. The two invited keynote speakers, Herbert Mushamp and Sylvia Lavin, are the foremost experts of the relationship between architecture and experience. The other speakers of the conference are international architects pursuing powerful, sensibility driven work. All of them share an interest in the affective powers of designs that deploy not only the powers of geometry, but of also pattern and color:

Hernan Diaz Alonso designed a shiny red and white installation of monsterous beauty for SF Moma, Francois Roche designed a building covered in gray dust and dirt from Bankok air, Mark Gage designed a purple topological installation inspired by the curves of a Jaguar car bodies, Dave Erdman designed a sublime translucent installation for Nike, Ali Rahim’s designed an intensely white ephemeral house, Kivi Sotamaa’s PS1 entry deployed forms, colors and patterns which evoked a mood of flowers and his housing complex with Gabe Esquivel’fused flowing curving surfaces with directional patterns creating a sensation of flow.

The conference format is inpired by Sylvia Lavin’s and Herbert Muschamp’s call for a new stage for a new discourse. Lavin has proposed a cocktail party as an alternative diagram to the traditional academic conference and Muschamp has proposed a Peripatetic format - after Aristoteles’ Peripatetic -Walking - School of Philosphy. Azul Rey conference in informal and moves from venue to venue during five days: There are two public events; the opening symposium and closing symposium. In between, the participants will move around Mexico city sites - Casa Barragan, a bullfight, a cocktail party and a school of architecture - discussing architecture and meeting with Mexican architects, students, conference participants. The discussions over the five days will be documented and published in a conference catalogue.
