Descriptions

MoA international seminar series has in two years brought close to 80 speakers around the globe to speak in 13 different seminars. Each year of the seminars is organized around the theme of architecture.

In year 2005, “The City. The Architecture. The Future?” –seminar looked into the future and role of architecture in the marked driven modern society. It took a critical but also an optimistic viewpoint towards the possibilities that global change sets for the social development. It also addressed the re-definitions of urban spaces and meaning.

The key-note speakers were Mark Goulthorpe /deCOi and Bjarke Ingels / Plot and was moderated by Ami Hasan / hasan&partners and Esa Laaksonen / Alvar Aalto Academy.

The seminar held in 2006, “Mood and Atmosphere in Architecture”, looked far beyond functionality and program. It argued that the power of architecture is in its ability to create new moods and experiences – atmospheres that readily react to quickly changing cities – to moments that correspond to our experiences of the world in this millennium.

The speakers were Jeff Kipnis / Ohio State University, Hernan Diaz-Alonso / Xefirotarch, Kivi Sotamaa / Ohio State University, Preston Scott Cohen / Harvard University and Samuli Woolston / ALA Architects. The seminar was moderated by Mark Isitt / Forum Magazine.

The seminar to be held in May 2007 is entitled “Architects with an Attitude” and will host speakers: José Oubrerie / Ohio State University, François Roche / R&Sie(n) and Ali Rahim / PennDesign. The seminar is moderated by Kivi Sotamaa.
